The Torrington Library was founded in 1864 by a group of men who wanted to do something worthwhile for their community.  The most active trustee at the time was Mr. Lauren Wetmore, who not only worked hard for the Library, but also remembered it in his will  Over the years other public-spirited citizens have followed Mr. Wetmore's example and because of this, the Library has developed into a learning center for the people of Torrington.  Trustees of the Library have endeavored to carry forward the ideals that benefactors such as Lauren Wetmore, Elisha Turner, Adelaide Coe Godfrey and Ella Seymour Coe fostered with theirOur reading room and public access internet stations generosity.

The building that houses the Torrington Library was constructed in 1900 with funds donated by Elisha Turner.  The addition that currently houses the Children's Room was constructed in 1926 with funds donated by Adelaide Coe Godfrey and Ella Seymour Coe.
